LJI Week 0: Introduction to Malroy.

My name is Mallory. I'm a 31 year old woman from the Missouri Ozarks. When I was 17, it took a lot of convincing to get the United States government to believe that I wasn't a boy named Malroy. They insisted that I do the whole Selective Service thing and started sending military recruiters to the high school to find me.

I guess the boobs got them off my back.

After the government, it was AARP begging Malroy to sign up. I went from 17 to 50 in a matter of months. At least I was consistently a dude!

I used to work for a local newspaper, but now I freelance should they need an extra hand. I'm a desk clerk at a hotel, which is actually a lot of fun! I also do replica art. I call my business MoonPrism and have been doing that since 2002.

To be honest, I'm really not the most interesting person. I've always loved writing, though, and have written fantasy most of my life. I wanted to be a cartoonist when I was nine and discovered Bill Waterson. I wanted to work for Hanna-Barbera. Then anime (particularly Sailor Moon) came into my life in the late 90s, and then I wanted to be a manga artist. After about 6 years of consistently only getting to 12 pages of artwork, I decided to try my hand at novel writing. I fell in love with it and wondered why I hadn't tried it sooner!

Fantasy is my passion, without a doubt. I do love reading a good nonfiction, which is why, I think, I love LJ so much. I love reading about people's lives. Maybe I'm just nosy! It's probably that.

I'm completely in love with the Korean girl group 2NE1 and have a huge girl crush on Park Bom. I love all kinds of music, from rap to country to Japanese and Korean pop to Chinese folk. Sa Ding Ding is definitely my go-to for writing. It puts me right where I need to be for a good fantasy story!

That said, I am mostly happily married to an English immigrant named Brendan. I say mostly because I would be 100% happy (instead of 98% happy) if he'd clean something once in a while. We just sent the government a big fat check for the removal of conditions on his green card - a step closer to citizenship. We've been married since 10/22/11. We met online in 2004 on a text-based game called SquidMOO. After that, we both started working for Toastsoft.net creating text-based space games for the visually impaired. Brendan and me hated each other. The guy who ran the show made us work together and it turned out there was chemistry! We met in person for the first time in summer of 2010 and knew within a few hours it was meant to be.

I'm the caretaker of a house that sits on 40 acres of land. My mom and stepdad, who are technically divorced, both live with me. I have nine cats and three dogs. It can all be stressful from time-to-time, but really, I know how lucky I am. I've been given a lot of wonderful opportunities in life, some of which I've let pass me by and shouldn't have, but overall, I've been very lucky. I'm a count-your-blessings kind of girl, and I try not to take mine for granted.

I'm VERY excited to be part of the LJ Idol family. I'm looking forward to making new friends, reading lots of interesting stories, and expanding my writing ability. I've been putting off joining for years, but now that this is the last one... I can't let another opportunity pass me by.

The first to stories make me want to giggle in delighted horror. That must have been weird.

<3 for the Harry Potter moodtheme.

A lot of interesting stories are a sure thing in Idol. In fact, I can no longer remember if some of those I read were entries here or parts of some very good books :)
It was definitely weird! The closer I got to age 26, the more I worried they would start harassing me again. After all, Malroy never did sign up for the selective service, and that's a felony! But five years later, I never have been bothered, so maybe they finally got it right in their paperwork or shredded Malroy's file.

I am addicted to Harry Potter. If it (or Jurassic Park) is ever on TV, I will drop everything to watch it. Which is stupid because I have the DVDs, but for some reason I always elect to watch it with commercials.
I've had similar trouble all my life due to my weird name, people think I'm a man and append a Mr. before my name :D

Great to make your acquaintance Mallory and good luck with LJIdol!
Oh yes. My mom's name is Lenore, but she goes by Len. She's often referred to as Mr. in the mail, too. Very few people realize that Mallory is a boys name. My in-laws sure did, and they are really weird about it.

Thank you for the welcome! I'm looking forward to the first week's topic!
You are my new best friend. I LOVE k-pop. xD Girl's Day is my favorite group but I love, love, love 2ne1. Park Bom is so freaking awesome though my obsession is CL. ;)
I just caught CL's live performance of her newest song MTBD and it was FANTASTIC.
Nine cats?! Wow. I love cats, but I can't imagine having nine of them. (Although I do live in London, where space is an issue).

Welcome to LJ Idol!
I am very fortunate living on so much land. It's only really tough during the winter when they all insist on sharing my bed, but during the summer they're out in the barns getting fat on mice!
Welcome! I couldn't not sign up for the last idol, either. It's crazy doing such a thing, but I don't know how to not be busy. I'm always happier when I'm busy even though I'm an introvert. I know that doesn't seem to make much sense. I don't understand it myself.

The whole Malroy story is interesting!
I am the exact same way. The very idea of not being busy... I just can't fathom it. I always have something that I absolutely must do. I'm also an introvert. Are you familiar with the MBTI? I'm an INTJ, so I can completely understand where you're coming from. It's almost like becoming someone else.
Good to meet you, and I'm glad you signed up. I look forward to reading your entries.

Thank you, Dan! Good to meet you, too!
Ljidol has definitely helped me with my writing, if for no other reason than just having to write every week.glad you joined up for this last one!
Thanks! I look forward to reading your work! This is all very exciting!
I wanna hang out and have a beer with Malroy, unless he's gotten too old now. =)
I understand the confusion with Selective Service. My last name gets frequently misspelled, including on some records at school. So while I was away in the Army, the government contacted my parents to warn them I could be in trouble for not registering in my typoed name. They told Uncle Sam he could find me already in his service. So, since them, I do make sure the name is right on anything legal or official.

Glad to see you in the LJI ranks!
Malroy will stay forever young in the hearts and minds of those who knew him, before his name was autocorrected to Mallory. Malroy Ecans became Mallory Evans in the flick of a wrist. No more red squiggles.

That sounds really scary. The government is scary. When we had to do my husband's interview, the interviewer was so terrifying that I actually had to scope out the trashcan because I nearly threw up.
I wrote for a while on 600seconds (10 min.) and found that I missed it.
Nice to meet you.
It's nice to meet you, too!
At least you weren't Malfoy. Or would that have been too obvious?

KPop is really a lot of fun, and I wish that American audiences had the chance to really hear music that is popular all over the world. I mean, I know it does happen, but it never gets the proper showcase because everything seems to have to be in English.

But before I get off on a rant, I'm glad you're participating!
Haha, I was Draco Malroy for Halloween a few years ago. I thought I was sooo clever.

I feel the same way. I like music in their originally recorded languages. 2NE1 was recently on The Bachelor, but I didn't watch it because I think that show is stupid (ahem) so I wonder if they played the song in Korean or English. The Korean version was way, way better. It seems like when they do translate something from Korean to English, it loses its entire meaning. It... gets dumb :\
I grew up in central-southern Missouri, so welcome from a fellow Show-Me Stater! (Ozarkian? Who knows.)
Central southern sounds Ozarkian! I'm from Salem, specifically. It's 30 miles south of Rolla.
I think someone in some cubicle must have been typing too fast. My maiden name is Evans so Malroy's full name was Malroy Ecans. Major typos.
My dad gets the opposite. His name is Gale and the world thinks he is a woman.

I look forward to reading more of your posts.
Gale is an awesome name. I hope his nickname was Gale Force at some point.
I feel the same way - been putting off joining LJ Idol but here I am for the last one, too.

"I love reading about people's lives. Maybe I'm just nosy! It's probably that."

Me too!
Glad you joined! I don't know the admin well enough to say maybe he'd bring it back, so I'd rather not bank on that and say "I'll just wait 'til it's back." I would be regretting that.
People often look at me indirectly or distractedly and automatically call me Mr. or sir instead of ma'am. Just because of my height. I mean, I suppose it is just because of that. I'm not ultra-femme, but I do have curves. But you sound interesting! Looking forward to reading you.
Striking icon!

I've been getting a lot of mixed reviews on my appearance. Someone asked me if my husband was my son (ouch) and last night asked my uncle if I was his 21 year old son's mom. Then today was told I look 19. It's all very confusing.
